Ever since its foundation in 1906, Van Cleef & Arpels has embodied the brilliance of jewelry savoir-faire. In 2012, the Maison takes an important step with the creation of L’ÉCOLE Van Cleef & Arpels. Its aim is to shed light on the very secretive world of jewelry and share its most precious asset - its savoir-faire - revealing the very soul of this exceptional craft.

A school that is generous and open...
For Van Cleef & Arpels, an ardent defender of the artistic crafts, passing
on, sharing and teaching knowledge is a duty.

L’ÉCOLE Van Cleef & Arpels is open to all, including an international public. This is not a professional school but a place for everyone to offer a unique path of discovery and learning for those who are passionate about jewelry and wish to become enlightened connoisseurs.

A different teaching approach
The non-technical curriculum of the school encourages the discovery of an art, the development of a discerning eye and the knowledge of materials. Its ambition is to encourage the intellectual and emotional understanding of the essence of jewelry and convey the craftsman’s skill through personal experience.

L’ÉCOLE Van Cleef & Arpels is located on the place Vendôme in an
18th century town house that embodies French Artistic Style. It offers:
An experimentation salon for handling, trying on…
Training salons for listening, watching, learning…
A boudoir-library for discussing, going in-depth…

Entering the world of Jewelry
A1: Stories and Inspirations
You will immerse yourself in the very essence of the history of jewelry to
explore the great aesthetic themes in their diversity and understand their
origin. You will find out about the great jewelers who have marked the
different chapters in the evolution of jewelry creation.

You will also discover how the human eye and hand have joined together
to work with and combine metal and stone in order to create unique and
extraordinary pieces, continuing to write the marvelous story of jewelry.

A2: Interpreting the Gemstones
You will begin an extraordinary voyage – deep into the heart of the stones –
from the mysteries of their birth, to their extraction and shaping.

You will touch and handle these stones and their unbelievable diversity will
be revealed to you. You will understand, with the guidance of the gemologist,
the origins of and reasons for their value. You will leave behind any previous
suppositions you may have had, letting your emotions lead you to the
discovery of how the human hand and genius have made this fabulous gift of
nature attain the sublime.

A3: Jewelry Mix and Match
After the epic story of the origins and history of styles, after the adventure
with stones, here is another facet of the world of jewels: wearing them, on
your own skin, as a part of you, to create a personal and intimate experience.
Conceived with specialists in style, this new stage will help you discover
how the wearing of jewels has evolved from a very codified universe, which
prescribed what had to be worn, hour by hour, occasion by occasion, to an era
of liberty when the wearer, led by her imagination, can dare to be different.

You will understand the love story and reciprocal influences between Jewels
and Couture. And finally, it will be your turn to invent “Jewelry Mix and
Match”; advised by a professional stylist, you can develop your creativity, dare
to wear jewels in a very personal way and explore your own style in mixing
and matching.

A4: Art Nouveau: 20 Years of Freedom
Reacting against the strict rules imposed by artistic academies of the
19th century, Art Nouveau gave birth, in the space of 20 years, to a completely
original style, breaking away from dogma and embracing modernity.

Guided by an art historian, you will discover its fundamental characteristics
in detail by exploring the different facets of this revolution in jewelry – the
designers without taboos, new shapes and techniques, innovative materials –
through a look at the breathtaking Parisian life at that time, where muses
and divas jostled each other for the attention of the public eye. Discover this
fascinating shooting star in the sky of art history!

A5: Talisman jewels: A Quest for Protection
Playing the role of intensely personal protective companions, talismanic jewels
invite us into a poetic world, ruled by gentle nature and the stars, transformed
and made sublime by the imagination and skill of man.

You will be introduced to the symbolic meaning of gemstones and to the
powers that they were said to have held over the times and civilizations. From
the mighty Moguls to Napoleon I, from Catherine de Medici to Elizabeth
Taylor, all were fascinated by these myths and legends. The secrets of Hindu
mandalas, Chinese codes and Arabic calligraphy will be revealed – and you
will discover not only the special signs and symbols of each culture but also
the universal language of Luck. Admire how these precious talismans have
found a place in the universe of the great jewelers.

B1: Symbols and Power of jewels
This module is conceived as an initiation and will enable you to explore the
symbolic dimension of jewels to discover their mysterious and legendary
origins, to enter into the heart of human passions and to relive the emotions
which have accompanied these remarkable adventures!

You will understand the deep imprint that jewels have made on different
cultures.

B2: Admiring uniqueness and team craftsmanship
A jewel is a very special object. Beyond the value of the metal and the stones
with which it is made, it holds a spark of human genius. You will discover how
the subtle combination of savoir-faire – the ancestral skills passed on from
generation to generation – and the most modern techniques give birth to
masterpieces resulting from tireless team effort.

You will have a view on why France and its cultural heritage have such a
unique role and place in jewelry creation.

While listening to and watching jewelers, and experiencing some of their
techniques hands-on, you will have access to the richness and excellence of
this artistic craftsmanship.

C1: Entering the Van Cleef & Arpels Universe
Once you have explored the different dimensions of jewelry creation in the
previous modules of the course, you can go on to discover the unique Universe
of Van Cleef & Arpels, full of magical creations that will be unveiled to you
through an overview of selected heritage and contemporary pieces.

You will touch, feel and understand the Van Cleef & Arpels difference by
wearing some of the Maison’s jewels yourself.

C2: Having access to Van Cleef & Arpels creations
After having discovered, understood and experienced the Universe of
Van Cleef & Arpels, the time has come to enter into the very heart of the
Maison.

In the studio, you will be in direct contact with the Creation Team. Then,
you will follow, step by step, the crafting of the jewels in the actual workshops
by visiting the Van Cleef & Arpels High Jewelry Atelier and in personally
meeting the artisans who bring their art to life.

Finally, guided by the Maison’s designers, you will live the exceptional
experience of conceiving a jewel created thanks to a special and unique client
consultation: ‘‘Designing Your Dreams’’.

C3: Gemstone Investigation: Recognize the Stones
Thanks to the “Interpreting the Gemstones” module, you will have trained
your eye and learned to use a gemologist’s loupe. Now, you can imagine
that you are inside one of the world’s legendary gemstone markets such as
Chanthaburi in Thailand or Ratnapura in Sri Lanka or yet again Bogotá in
Colombia.

Aim: look for and select gemstones yourself, with confidence. With the
“Gemstones Investigation: Recognize the Stones” module, L’ÉCOLE
Van Cleef & Arpels helps you to master the basic knowledge and tools of
gemology. Train your eye so as to become an enlightened connoisseur!
