MONKEY BUSINESS IN KOTA BARU, KELANTAN

KEE@FSWMAG.COM

A FAMILY BROUGHT THEIR 2 PET MONKEYS TO PLAY WITH THE CROWD BY KOTA BARU'S FAMOUS RIVERFRONT NEAR PADANG BANK.

There is the Royal Viewing Tower in this charming area called KB Waterfront which is usually filled with strollers and locals out to enjoy the river breezes as the riverbank is like few metres away.

The area is a hub of activities as it is adjacent to Jalan Jabatan Sultan Yahya, home to Ridel and One Station hotels. These two are 2 star hotels with no pretensions and rooms start from RM 120 and very popular with young, hip and happening.

There is even a chic boutique selling fashionable garments, shoes and accessories flaunting famous designer brands at a fraction of their original prices so they cannot be genuine but top grade imitations. So well made using identical materials it can only mean the factory producing the original ones ordered by the fashion houses in Paris, Milan, London or Tokyo purposely produced more than the amount requested!

This is a common practise by less than scrupulous factories since it is impossible for fashion houses to send a battalion to check on every item being churned out in China or even in Italy or Spain unless they own the factories like Louis Vuitton or the top houses!

Also uncommon is the amusing scene of 2 tied monkeys playing with passers-by!

The owners allowed their pet monkeys to be touched, petted and caressed by children and adults who, like me, were fascinated by the minkey's antics of jumping, prancing and backflipping.

They did not bite and seemed fearless of humans as they must have been raised as babies so they were so familiar with humans!

I advised the owners to dress the monkeys in red Chinese costumes and bring them to nearest temple where Chinese worshippers will be attracted and delighted to see these simians since this is Year of Monkey!

More so when the monkeys' owners are Malays! In Kelantan, it is normal for Malays to walk around temple grounds checking out the statues and taking photos with them without fear of losing their Islam faith, same as Westerners visiting mosques.
